Leonardo Colemon

"I’m looking forward to the day when rectal microbicides are available. Development of an effective rectal microbicide will give all sexual stripes new and easier options to be anally intimate and safe with each other. The possibility that I will be able to use something that is protective against HIV and STIs AND acts as a lubricant will give me new and freer options. As we are not all able to use condoms all the time and some of us prefer not to use condoms, rectal microbicides have the potential to allow us to have fearless ‘skin on skin’ sex again.Research (clinical and behavioral) on rectal microbicides will provide necessary information on how to develop a product that is effective, safe and easy to use."

"If I am a woman and I like sex I am seen as bad. If I am a woman who likes lots of sex, I am seen asa whore. If I am a woman who likes anal sex then I am seen as bad, dirty and a whore. My message to rectal microbicide advocates is: Stand up for me! Be realistic – demand the impossible! If you do this a rectal microbicide will not only become possible but a reality."
Jo Robinson is Sector Development Officer: HIV Health, Healthcare & Wellbeing at the Terrence Higgins Trust in London, England and a valued partner of IRMA..
